Bowling score sheet
Make a blank bowling score sheet for your team or league night: pick the number of bowlers and games, add a team name and date, switch on handicap columns if you need them, and print.

How to use the score sheet maker
- Choose how many bowlers (1–8) and how many games (1–3) you need. A three-game league series is the default.
- Add a team or league name and the date if you want them printed at the top. Type bowler names, one per line, to pre-fill the name column, or leave it blank to write names by hand.
- Tick average and handicap columns for a handicap league. Each game then gets Avg, Scratch, Hdcp and Total columns, and the series table adds a series-with-handicap column.
- Press Print sheet. Only the bowling score sheet is printed, in black on white, so it copies well.
How to fill in a bowling score sheet
Each frame has small boxes in the top corner for the balls and a larger space below for the running total. Frames 1 to 9 have two small boxes; the 10th has three, because a strike or spare there earns extra balls.
| Mark | Meaning | How it scores |
|---|---|---|
| X | Strike: all ten pins on the first ball | 10 + next two balls |
| / | Spare: the rest of the pins on the second ball | 10 + next ball |
| – | Miss or gutter ball | 0 |
| F | Foul: the bowler crossed the foul line | 0 for that ball |
| 7, 8… | Pins knocked down | That number |
| circled number | The first ball left a split | Same as the number; it is only a record |
Write the running total in a frame only when you know it. An open frame can be filled in straight away. A spare has to wait for the next ball and a strike for the next two, so it is normal to have one or two empty totals behind the bowler who is on a run of strikes.
Check a filled-in sheet
Type a game in score-sheet shorthand and see it scored: use X, /, – or F and digits, with or without spaces. For example X 7/ 9- X X X 81 6/ X X81 scores 201.
Worked example: three frames
Say a bowler rolls 8 then 2 (spare), then a strike, then 7 and 1.
- Frame 1: write 8 and / in the small boxes. The total stays empty until the next ball: a strike, so 10 + 10 = 20.
- Frame 2: write X in the right-hand box. It needs two more balls: 7 and 1, so 10 + 7 + 1 = 18, and the running total is 20 + 18 = 38.
- Frame 3: write 7 and 1. Open frame, so 38 + 8 = 46.
At the end of the game, copy the 10th-frame total into the Scratch column. In a handicap league, add the handicap to get the Total, then add the games across for the series. If you need to work out the pins, our bowling handicap calculator does it with the USBC fractions-dropped rule. To score live on your phone instead of paper, use the bowling score calculator.
Tips for league and team nights
- Print one sheet per pair of lanes so each team keeps its own record.
- Write averages before the first game, not after, so nobody argues about which average was used.
- Use a pen for marks and a pencil for running totals, which are the numbers most often corrected.
How we tested it
The shorthand checker uses the same scoring code as our score calculator, which runs against automated Node tests: a perfect game of 12 strikes scores 300, all gutter balls score 0, all 9 / spares with a final 9 score 190, all 5 / spares with a final 5 score 150, and the example game above scores 201 with the running totals 20, 39, 48, 78, 106, 125, 134, 154, 182, 201 that we worked out by hand. The tests also check that impossible balls such as 5 then 6 are rejected and that the 10th frame handles X X X, X 5 / and 9 / X.
Frequently asked questions
What paper size and orientation should I use?
The sheet is laid out to fit US Letter or A4. Landscape gives each frame more room for handwriting; the page asks the browser for landscape, but you can change it in the print dialog. If the print preview cuts off a column or a game, set the scale to “Fit to page” or print fewer games per sheet.
Can I save the sheet as a PDF instead?
Yes. Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” (or “Microsoft Print to PDF”) as the printer. Only the sheet is printed; the settings, text and menus on this page are hidden.
Do I write the strike in the left or right box?
By convention a strike goes in the right-hand small box of frames 1–9 and the left box stays empty, because the frame ended after one ball. In the 10th frame each ball has its own box, so X X X fills all three.
What is the Avg column for?
When you switch on handicap columns, the sheet adds a column for each bowler's league average next to the name, plus Hdcp and Total columns at the end. Writing the average on the sheet makes it easy for anyone to check the handicap.
How do I mark a split?
Most scorers draw a small circle around the pin count of the first ball, for example a circled 8, when the remaining pins are a split. If the split is then converted, the spare mark goes in the second box as usual. It does not change the score; it is only a record.
