How to use this football quiz
There are two ways to use the 60 questions above. Play the quiz gives you ten random questions with four options each. Tap an answer and you see straight away whether you were right, with a one-line explanation, and your score comes up at the end. Press “Play again” and you get ten different questions, so a few rounds will take you through the whole set. Pick a level from the menu to play only the easy, medium or hard questions.
Question list shows every question with its answer hidden under “Show answer”. This is the mode for a quizmaster: open answers one at a time as you mark, or press “Reveal all answers” before you print a crib sheet.
How to run a football pub quiz night
These football pub quiz questions are grouped by difficulty, which makes rounds easy to build. A simple format that works in most pubs and clubs:
- Teams of up to six, each with one answer sheet. Ask phones to stay in pockets; one warning, then the team loses the round.
- Three rounds of ten: one easy, one medium, one hard. Read each question twice and allow about 30 seconds before the next.
- Score by difficulty: 1 point for an easy question, 2 for medium and 3 for hard. That stops the hard round being a lottery and rewards the teams who really know their football.
- Swap sheets to mark between rounds while you read out the answers and the one-line explanations. The explanations settle most arguments.
- Tie-breaker: keep back one hard question with a number for an answer, such as the year of the first FA Cup final (1872). Each tied team writes a number; nearest wins.
Worked example: a 30-minute round
Say you have half an hour between the curry and the raffle. Take 6 easy, 6 medium and 3 hard questions. With the 1-2-3 scoring above the maximum is 6 × 1 + 6 × 2 + 3 × 3 = 27 points. A team that gets all the easy ones, four of the medium and one hard question scores 6 + 8 + 3 = 17, which is a good showing. Most of the hard questions depend on a single name or year, so decide before you start whether a surname on its own counts, and announce it.
How the questions were chosen
A football quiz with answers is only useful if the answers are right, so we followed three rules when writing these football quiz questions:
- Only settled facts. Past World Cup and European Cup finals, founding dates, retired players and the Laws of the Game. Nothing about current tables, current managers or transfers.
- Records are fixed to a date. Instead of “who has scored the most World Cup goals?”, which could change at the next tournament, we ask which German reached 16 goals in 2014. The answer can never go out of date.
- One right answer, three fair wrong ones. The wrong options are real players, clubs or years from the same era, so guessing is hard but no option is a trick.
The easy round suits casual fans and younger players, the medium round needs a decent memory of the last few decades, and the hard round is for the person in your team who still talks about Italia 90.
How we tested
The quiz runs on one small engine, and we wrote automated Node tests for it (tests/quiz.test.js) and ran them before publishing. They read the question list straight from this page's source and check that:
- all 60 questions have a unique id and no question appears twice;
- every question has exactly four different options, and the correct answer is one of them;
- a round always contains 10 different questions, and a second round avoids the questions from the first while enough are left;
- after the options are shuffled, the engine still knows which button is right: in 600 test rounds (6,000 shuffled questions) per quiz the correct answer landed in each of the four positions about a quarter of the time, and was always the one marked correct;
- the score counts only right answers (all right gives 10/10, all wrong gives 0/10, and answering the same question twice is ignored).
Facts were checked separately. Every question was written from long-established football history. Where we were less than certain of a detail, we checked it against Wikipedia and match reports before including it: for example, that Salvatore Schillaci won the Golden Ball at Italia 90 and that Kevin Moran was the first player sent off in an FA Cup final. Questions whose answer could change after 2025, such as all-time scoring records held by active players, were left out or rewritten with a fixed date.
Every question was then reviewed a second time in a separate fact-check pass, and the details we doubted were checked against Wikipedia and news reports.
Those are the only tests we ran: we have not tried the quiz with groups of players or on a range of phones, so if something looks wrong, please tell us.
Frequently asked questions
Are these questions suitable for children?
The easy round is fine for most children from about ten who follow football: it covers the rules, famous clubs and recent World Cup winners. The medium and hard rounds lean on history from the 1950s to the 1990s, which adults and older fans will find fairer.
Why are there no questions about this season?
On purpose. Current league positions, top scorers and managers change every week, so a question that is right today can be wrong by the time you read it out. Every question here is fixed to a past event or a permanent rule.
Can I use these questions at my pub or club quiz?
Yes. They are free to read out at a pub, club, school or charity quiz. Use “Print with answers” for the quizmaster’s sheet and “Print questions only” if you want to hand out sheets for teams to write on.
Is my best score saved?
Your best score for each level is kept in your own browser on this device, so you can try to beat it later. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no sign-up.
I think an answer is wrong. What should I do?
Please tell us through the contact details in the footer, with a source if you have one. Accuracy matters more to us than anything else on this page, and a confirmed mistake will be fixed or the question removed.
