How to pick a basketball team name
- Short enough to yell. Basketball is fast and loud. Your bench will shout the name, the league will put it on a schedule, and a name of one to three words works best for both.
- Use the language of the game. The funniest basketball team names come from things every player knows: a brick (an ugly miss), an airball (missing rim and backboard), a travel (too many steps without a dribble), getting posterized (dunked on). Using them shows your team actually plays.
- Read the league rules. Church, school and company leagues often ban crude names, and basketball has plenty of words that turn into double meanings. If a name makes you smirk for the wrong reason, the league office will notice too.
- Make yourselves the joke. “Zero Vertical” is funny because you admit it. Names that mock an opponent, a referee or a group of people tend to start arguments rather than laughs.
Where your team name appears
Many gym scoreboards only say Home and Guest, so your name lives mainly on the league schedule, the standings, the official scorebook and the referee’s game sheet. Online standings and league apps often shorten long names, and the cut-off depends on the system. Every name on this page is 30 characters or fewer, and the shortest ones (Buckets, Hoopla) fit anywhere.
On jerseys, numbers come first: most leagues require a clear number on the front and back of each shirt. A short team name can then be printed big across the chest; a long one has to shrink and becomes hard to read from the stands.
Names for different kinds of teams
- Adult rec and over-35 leagues: self-mocking funny names are the tradition (“Old Man Game”, “Ice Bath Required”).
- Pickup runs and 3x3: a short, cool name that fits on a bracket, such as “Ankle Breakers” or “Splash Zone”.
- Youth teams: the family-friendly list. Young players like names they can chant in a huddle, like “Hoop Troop”.
- Intramurals: puns go down well with a student crowd; “Swishful Thinking” and “Court Jesters” are easy to explain.
Tips for basketball puns
- Swap a basketball word into a common phrase: wishful thinking becomes “Swishful Thinking”.
- Look for words with a double life: court, net, bank, foul and pick all mean something outside the gym.
- Song and film titles work if the swap is one sound: “Dunk Side of the Moon”.
- Say it aloud once. If someone has to explain it, keep looking.
How we tested
We wrote and reviewed every name by hand. An automated Node test then reads this page’s list and checks that no basketball team name appears twice (ignoring capitals and punctuation), that none is longer than 30 characters and that every style has names. It runs the 10-name generator 1,000 times and checks for 10 different names every time, checks that each style filter returns only that style, and runs the basketball mixer 800 times with and without a teammate name and town to check every result is unique and within the limit. HTML typed into the boxes is shown as plain text. We have not tested the names in a real league.
More sports: volleyball team names, softball team names and fantasy football team names.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for an over-35 or dad league team?
Lean into it. Names like “Old Man Game”, “Knee Brace Nation”, “Zero Vertical” and “Ice Bath Required” get a laugh because they are honest. Opponents will remember you, and it takes the pressure off when the jump shot is not falling.
Can we use an NBA team name for our rec team?
Many youth and rec leagues do hand out pro team names, and for an unofficial team that is usually fine. For printed shirts or anything you sell, use your own name: pro team names and logos are trademarks. An original name also means you are not the third “Lakers” in the league.
How do I pick a name for a 3x3 team?
Three players means you can build the name from first names or initials, or pick a name about a trio. Type one teammate’s name into the mixer and your court or town into the second box for names that are clearly yours.
Is “Ball Hogs” OK for a kids’ team?
It is clean, but it pokes fun at selfish play, so coaches of younger kids often prefer a positive name. The family-friendly filter shows names like “Hoop Troop”, “Swish Fish” and “Bucket Brigade” that children can chant.
