How to choose a softball team name

Where your softball team name will appear

Your name goes on the league schedule and standings, the scorebook or scoring app, the lineup card you hand to the umpire, and on a scoreboard if the field has one. Many park scoreboards only show Home and Visitor, but league websites and apps shorten long names, and the cut-off depends on the system. Every name on this page is 30 characters or fewer.

On jerseys, numbers are the priority, and a sponsor may want their name on the front. A short team name leaves room for both and can be printed large enough to read from the bleachers. Long names on the back of a shirt usually end up tiny.

        Tips for softball puns

        How we tested

We wrote and reviewed every name by hand. An automated Node test then reads this page’s list and checks that no softball team name appears twice (ignoring capitals and punctuation), that none is longer than 30 characters and that all five styles are present. It runs the 10-name generator 1,000 times to check every set has 10 different names, checks that each style filter returns only that style, and runs the softball mixer 800 times with and without a teammate name and town, checking every result is unique and within the limit. HTML typed into the boxes appears as plain text. We have not tested the names with a real league.

        Frequently asked questions

Our sponsor is paying for jerseys. Do we have to use their name?

Check the deal, but many sponsored rec teams use both: the sponsor’s name on the jersey and a team name on the league standings, or a combination such as “Miller’s Plumbing Mitt-Fits”. Type the sponsor into the town box of the mixer for ideas, and keep the full name within the league’s length limit.

        Are beer-league names allowed?

In adult rec leagues they are common, but some city parks departments and company leagues ban alcohol references. If your games are at a public park on a weekend morning with kids around, the family-friendly names are the safer pick.

What does “can of corn” mean?

It is old baseball slang for an easy, high fly ball that a fielder catches without moving much. It makes a good team name because players know it and it sounds harmless to everyone else. “Ducks on the pond” (runners on base) and “the hot corner” (third base) work the same way.

Can we use the same name for summer and fall seasons?

Yes, and keeping it makes you easier to find on league websites. Many leagues let you re-register a returning team under the same name. If you change the roster a lot, a new season is a natural time for a new name.
