How to choose a volleyball team name that works
- Make it easy to shout. Volleyball is loud and fast. Your team name gets yelled between rallies and read out by the league organizer, so two or three words that roll off the tongue beat a long sentence.
- Use the sport’s own words. Volleyball has great vocabulary for puns. A dig is a defensive save, a pancake is a one-hand save with the hand flat on the floor, a roof is a stuff block, a joust is two players pushing on the ball above the net, and a shank is a pass that flies off sideways. Names built on these sound like they came from players, not from a generic list.
- Check your league’s rules. Rec centers, schools and church leagues often ban names with innuendo or alcohol, and volleyball terms make accidental double meanings easy. Read your name out loud to someone outside the team before you register it.
- Laugh at your own team. “Wrong Rotation Again” and “Service Error Specialists” are funny because you are the joke. Names that put down the other team, a referee or a group of people do not age well.
Where your volleyball team name appears
In most leagues your name goes on the online standings and schedule, the score sheet the referee or scorekeeper fills in, and sometimes an electronic scoreboard. Scoreboards and standings tables often shorten long names, and the limit depends on the system, so we kept every name here at 30 characters or fewer.
On jerseys, numbers matter more than names. Indoor teams usually need numbers on each shirt, and the libero (the defensive specialist) must wear a jersey in a different color from teammates. A short team name on the front of the shirt can be printed large and still read from across the gym.
Names for different kinds of teams
- Beach doubles: with two players, a name about a pair or about the beach itself (“Two Peas in a Pod”, “Sand in Every Pocket”) fits better than a big squad name.
- Co-ed rec leagues: keep it inclusive and avoid jokes that work only for one gender. Funny names about the team’s skill are the safe choice.
- Youth and school teams: use the family-friendly list. Kids like names they can chant, such as “Up and Over” or “Serve-ivors”.
- Competitive teams: the cool and tough lists sound serious on a tournament bracket.
Tips for writing your own volleyball pun
- Take a famous title or phrase and swap in a volleyball word: The Shawshank Redemption becomes “The Shankshaw Redemption”.
- Words with two meanings, like set, serve and block, do half the work for you.
- If you play on the beach, sand and sun words open a second set of puns.
- Test the pun on a non-player. If they get it, it works on any scoreboard.
How we tested
We wrote and reviewed every name by hand. An automated Node test then reads the list from this page and checks that no volleyball team name appears twice (ignoring capitals and punctuation), that none is longer than 30 characters, and that all five styles are present. The same test runs the 10-name generator 1,000 times and checks every set has 10 different names, checks the style filter returns only that style, and runs the volleyball mixer 800 times with and without a teammate name and town, checking each result is unique and within the length limit. HTML typed into the boxes is shown as plain text. We have not tested the names with a real league.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a beach doubles team?
With only two players, names about a pair work well: “Two Peas in a Pod”, or a mix of both first names. Beach words such as sand, tan lines and sunburn suit the vibe. Type one partner’s name into the mixer and use the town box for the other, or for your beach.
Which volleyball terms make the best puns?
Short words that already mean something else: dig, set, ace, block, serve, spike and pass. Less common terms like pancake, joust, roof and shank make names other teams have not used, though only volleyball players will get the joke.
Can a school or youth team use these names?
Use the family-friendly filter. Those names avoid drinks, rude double meanings and anything aimed at the other team. Most of the puns are clean too; the funny group includes a few mentions of beer-league life that suit adult rec leagues better.
Should our team name go on our jerseys?
Players’ numbers come first: most leagues require them, and the libero must wear a different colored jersey from the rest of the team. A team name on the front is a nice extra. Shorter names can be printed larger and are easier to read from the stands.
